vadose zone
the layer of soil that is normally unsaturated by water (having soil pores containing both air and water), and that usually extends from the soil surface downward to the permanent water table —note the vadose zone may be referred to as the zone of aeration —see phreatic, zone of saturation This definition last updated 08/17/2008
