map projection
a mathematical model for converting locations on the earth's surface from spherical to planar coordinates, allowing flat maps to depict three-dimensional features —note some map projections preserve the integrity of shape; others preserve the accuracy of area, distance, or direction; no one projection can preserve all four spatial properties; any such representation distorts some parameter of the earth's surface, e.g., distance, area, shape, direction This definition last updated 07/14/2008
