large fire organization

(LFO) an interagency organizational system to suppress large fires —note 1. LFO is a designation of the national interagency fire qualification system (NIFQS) —note 2. the LFO system has been replaced by the incident command system (ICS); LFO terms include the following:

crew boss the person in supervisory charge of usually five to 30 fire fighters and responsible to the sector boss for their performance, safety, and welfare

division boss the supervisory staff member responsible for all suppression activity on a fire division under general instructions from the fire boss or a line boss acting for the fire boss

finance chief the staff officer responsible to the fire boss for timekeeping, compensation for injury, fiscal claims, and expenditure records

fire boss the person responsible for all fire suppression and service activities on a fire

general fire headquarters (GHQ) the personnel who command fire-fighting forces on a multizone campaign fire when the complexity of the situation requires that each zone be managed more or less as a separate major fire, each with its own camp(s) and its own command staff —note GHQ may also manage one or more small fires that are adjacent to the campaign fire and tactically related to the larger fire

line boss the supervisory officer responsible for executing the fire suppression plan of attack adopted by the fire boss —note the line boss may act as coordinator between two or more divisions or may supervise three or four sector bosses if no divisions have been established

plans chief the staff officer responsible for the compilation and analysis of data needed for developing fire suppression plans

safety chief the person responsible to the fire boss for identifying hazards and minimizing risks associated with fire suppression

sector boss the person responsible to a division boss, line boss, or fire boss, depending on the degree of organization required, for fire suppression work on one sector of a fire —note a sector boss supervises two or more crew bosses
