breast height
a standard height from ground level, generally 4.5 ft (1.37 m), for recording diameter, circumference (girth), or basal area of a tree —note 1. the measurement is usually taken on the uphill side of the tree and includes any duff layer that may be present, but does not include unincorporated woody debris that may rise above the ground line —note 2. in Europe, breast height is 4.25 ft (1.30 m) above the ground —see diameter at breast height (DBH)This definition last updated 07/17/2008
